  • Research and development

    “Research and development have a high priority at Winkelmann Automotive. Only the further development of our existing products and the development of new, innovative products and process enables us to retain our unique selling points and our competitiveness.

    In the pre-development process we promote the fundamental developments for new technologies, processes and products and examine how these can be transferred to our range of products. New product concepts are designed and individual functioning models are built, after which their suitability is analysed on specially developed test beds. We rely heavily on cooperation with universities and colleges, as well as with strong industrial partners in order to continually extend our competence.

    In the field of product and process development, individual, customer-specific products and process developments are created in proven “”simultaneous engineering processes””. Here, the functionality and the production-oriented design of the products have the highest priority. Starting with the customer’s enquiry we develop initial construction concepts and optimise these with various methods, including FEA. In parallel with this, in close cooperation with the customer we create schedules for series production, taking into account the function of the component and production costs.

    Even in the production of samples, we use the same production technologies as in the later series production wherever possible. This has the essential advantage that the following series start-up times are considerably reduced and the characteristics of the product which are determined by the production method can also be taken into consideration for testing the product. The final product tests are carried out on our specially developed test beds and in our own testing laboratories. Real-life stresses on the product are simulated on the test beds in order to enable predictions about the behaviour and lifespans of the products at an early stage.”

  • Production methods


    At Winkelmann Automotive a wide range of products made from various materials are developed and produced for car and truck transmissions. We use many different production methods. Our objective is to produce our products from as few individual components as possible, in order to achieve maximum stability and robustness with minimum use of materials and weight in our products. We achieve this with our production engineering know-how, which has been developed and continually refined over more than 100 years.

    This essentially relates to four processes:

  • Forming Technology


    Forming technology is the original technology and core competence of our company, which initially concentrated on precise, rotationally symmetrical products. With this it is possible to manufacture pulleys, vibration damper housings, flexplates and plate carriers in a “one-piece design”. This makes the components considerably stronger and more stable. Deep drawing, shearing, stamping, roll forming and flow forming process are primarily used for production. With suitable interlinking of these processes it is possible to attain maximum strength of the products with minimum use of material. This results from the high strengthening of the cold-formed steels as well as from the induction of compression tension in the boundary layers of the components.

  • Thermoset Technology

    [Not a valid template]With our own, innovative thermoset technology “WIN:DUR”, since 1992 Winkelmann Automotive has focused on the so-called “injection stamping” method, which is now the state-of-the-art for highly stressed components. Injection stamping is a combination of injection moulding and pressing, which utilises the advantages of both processes. These are essentially strength which is independent of direction due to an homogenous distribution of material, as well as high heat resistance combined with high resistance to media due to the basic structure of thermoset materials. This makes the reliable use of WIN:DUR possible for complex components in technologically highly developed engines.

  • Joining technology


    Especially in the field of fuel distribution systems, joining technology is an important part of the production chain. Here, various welding technologies such as TIG welding or projection welding are used to position and spot-weld the individual components, as well as various soldering technologies such as brazing under protective gas or inductive soldering for metallurgical bonding. Thanks to decades of know-how we can reliably join fuel distribution systems to close tolerances and with high strength. However, joining by forming, such as cold and hot riveting is one of our standard technologies and is used for example for the production of flexplates.

  • Vulcanization


    For vulcanization on vertical and horizontal injection moulding machines with a closing force of between 2500 KN and 4000 KN only an injection moulding process with hot sub-distribution, cold runner with hot sub-distribution and needle valve cold runner with direct injection without waste is used.

    For injection moulding, the elastomer mixture is plastified in the extruder and heated up so that the mixture can be injected into the hot tool at high pressure.

    To save resources and increase the quality of the vibration damper, in 2005 we began to inject and vulcanize vibration dampers with needle valve technology. In 2008 we converted the first bonded vibration damper to this process. This was followed in 2009 by the conversion of several rubber rings for non-bonded vibration dampers.

    For bonded vibration dampers, the metal parts must be de-greased, sandblasted and coated with a primer and a cover coat (binding agent). We have fully automated these processes for large series. Continuous monitoring of the process parameters ensures quality.

    For non-bonded vibration dampers a rubber ring is vulcanised and then pressed between the cathodically dip-coated metal parts.

  • Quality

    At Winkelmann, the high demands of the automotive industry with regard to technical and functional quality are always at the focus of development, design and production. With thorough know-how, competent and highly motivated employees, as well as the very latest production technologies, we produce products and components, which often even exceed the continually increasing demands of our customers.

    With our target of “”zero fault”” quality, the quality features of products and processes are specified on the basis of the international certifications ISO/TS 16949 and ISO 14001 even at the planning stage. Through our quality control and various quality inspections, both in the individual process stages as well as in the final inspection, we are able to ensure the required high quality standards of the automotive industry for each of our products. At the same time, we utilise the innovative power and sense of responsibility of our employees and partners in order to develop new, future-oriented products, components and processes which help our customers to shape the mobile society of the future.

    1898 Foundation of the company Winkelmann & Pannhoff: Heinrich Winkelmann and Caspar Pannhoff begin the production of raw goods for cooking pots and pans.

    Preservation of our natural environment and the basis of life of future generations, secure employment and the continuous improvement of working conditions has a very high priority with us. The objectives which are associated with this are jointly implemented together with all of our employees. Because of this, we have our environmental performance audited and certified on a regular basis.

    In the field of environmental protection, our employees are motivated to use raw materials, energy, water and other goods economically and in a environmentally conscious manner by means of training and regular information.

    In all environmental issues, which work openly with our contract partners and officials. With an environmental report we wish to provide regular information about our environmental protection measures. For activities and processes, which are critical to the environment and are unfortunately unavoidable according to the state-of-the-art, emergency plans are worked out and the necessary organisational and technical measures are taken in order to prevent the accidental release of substances or energy.

    Performance of an internal environmental audit is an especially important part of the Environmental Management System. The audits prove the effectiveness and function of individual elements or the entire management system. All divisions or departments of the company are examined with internal audits at regular intervals. The basis of the internal system audits is a catalogue of auditing questions, which is based on the standards DIN EN ISO 14001:2005 and the company Environmental Management Manual, including the procedures and work instructions.

    The Winkelmann Production System (WPS) is used to optimise work and production processed for the very highest levels of customer satisfaction through perfect quality, optimum value for money and uncompromising adherence to delivery deadlines. This is an integrated system of strategies which is used throughout the entire Winkelmann group in order to maximise work efficiency by eliminating waste.

    This is all carried out against the background of a changing competitive situation on the global market and increasing customer expectations with regard to adherence to delivery deadlines, short delivery times (often even just-in-time) as well as high cost pressures and the demand for innovative solutions for the future of the automotive industry.     In engine construction, legal requirements for the reduction of emissions and the associated goal of reducing fuel consumption lead to a reduction in cubic capacity (downsizing) with increasing engine speeds. A higher power density causes greater stresses on engine components, primarily in the power chain components of the transmission. We are meeting these increased demands with innovative solutions for our system components.

  • Pulleys and timing belt pulleys

    As early as 1992 Winkelmann Automotive developed “WIN:DUR”, its own, innovative thermosetting plastic technology. This so-called “injection stamping” is a combination of injection moulding and pressing, which combines the advantages of both processes for industrial use. With this process we have supplemented our steel components, which have proved themselves millions of cases, with high strength but lightweight engine components. In addition we are one of the few manufacturers which also supplies hybrid discs made from thermosetting plastic in combination with other materials such as steel, thermoplastic materials or elastomers.

  • Decoupled pulley systems


    Our decoupled WIN:DUR belt pulley systems are achieved with a soft elastomer spring to decouple the belt drive from crankshaft vibrations and therefore lead to a longer life of the belts and ancillary equipment, while at the same time providing good acoustic characteristics.

  • Pulleys


    We produce pulleys from steel, aluminium and plastic, which fulfil the highest technical requirements as well as setting trends with regard to costs. Regardless of whether they are WIN:DUR pulleys or steel pulleys – we always develop the solution which optimally fulfills our customers’ requirements both functionally and economically.

  • Camshaft components


    WIN:DUR toothed belt wheels to drive camshafts both with and without integrated adjustment mechanisms to change the valve control times, as well as toothed belt wheels to drive electrical steering systems, provide an opportunity to reduce both the static weight as well as the masses which are moved. In comparison with solutions made of sintered metal, a weight saving of up to 70% can be achieved with thermosetting plastics. As well as this, we produce precision end-pieces for steel tube camshafts, which enable a weight reduction of up to 45%in comparison with solid camshafts.

  • Encoder wheels

     


    In order to control all of the functions in the engine, the control unit requires precise information about the current position of the crankshaft. Our encoder wheels are used for this. Thanks to extremely precise production and stringent controls, we ensure the dimensional tolerances of these components, which are essential for the fuel consumption, quiet running and environmental compatibility of modern internal combustion engines.

  • Deflection rollers

    [Not a valid template]We produce deflection rollers from steel or thermosetting plastic. These are manufactured as small assemblies, with a ball bearing, dust cap and bolt. According to requirements, the ball bearings can be single or double.

  • Fuel distribution systems


    Winkelmann Automotive is one of the most innovative manufacturers of fuel distribution systems for internal combustion engines and is one of the world’s leading suppliers. In cooperation with our customers we develop and produce innovative fuel system components for internal combustion engines. Starting with the conceptual design as a standard service, we develop the required components step by step until they are ready for series production. In addition to our high strength stainless steel fuel distribution systems, which have proved themselves in millions of cases, we also produce low pressure systems made from special plastics for special applications.

  • High pressure fuel distribution systems


    Through the use of high quality stainless steels, our fuel distribution systems resist corrosive fuels and increasing injection pressures.

  • Low pressure fuel distribution systems


    Due to the increasing legal requirements in the area of residual contamination and emission requirements, our fuel distribution systems also comply with the globally required quality standards in the low pressure range.

  • Fuel and oil injection lines


    As a system partner, in addition to our high pressure and low pressure fuel distribution systems, we also provide the automotive industry with individually designed fuel and oil injection lines.

  • Vibration dampers


    Throughout the world, Winkelmann Automotive is a highly innovative manufacturer in the field of torsional vibration dampers. Our vibration components cancel our torsional vibrations in crankshafts, camshafts and ancillary equipment, reduce noise and therefore enable quiet running.

  • Assembled dampers


    Standard vibration dampers, in which the vulcanised elastomer ring is assembled between two metal components. For higher dynamic loads a chemical bond between the elastomer and the metal parts can be used.

  • Vulcanized dampers

    [Not a valid template]Vulcanized bonded vibration dampers enable a free geometric design of the elastomer section and are suitable for high vibration loads.

  • Dampers with decoupled pulley wheels


    High combustion pressures and low running speeds, with large moments of inertia of the ancillary equipment cause increased problems with belt drives. Pulley couplings are therefore used to drive ancillary equipment. With a soft elastomer spring they decouple the belt drive from crankshaft vibrations and therefore achieve a longer life for the belt and the ancillary equipment as well as good acoustic characteristics.

    Belt pulley couplings on an elastomer basis can be combined with all damper versions or can be installed individually.

  • Viscous dampers

    [Not a valid template]Viscous dampers dissipate the vibration energy via the shearing of silicon oil, which works in a precise gap between the seismic mass and the hub. These dampers work over a wide range and are suitable for very high vibration loads. In addition to applications for cars, Winkelmann Automotive also produces viscous dampers for commercial vehicles and marine applications.

  • Transmission components

    With more than 100 years of experience in forming technology, Winkelmann Automotive develops and produces weight-optimised components in “one-piece-design”. Our know-how for the manufacture millions of units with complicated geometries within very close tolerances is appreciated and utilised by the automotive industry throughout the world.

  • Flexplates


    Our flexplates are flexible in the axial direction and are also very torsionally rigid. They can absorb the breathing of the converter and compensate for any movements between the engine and the transmission and at the same time transfer the continually increasing engine torques to the transmission.

  • Lamellar carriers

    Lamellentraeger
    For decades, Winkelmann Automotive has produced plate carriers using the forming process named after the Swiss engineer Grob. Due to its high flexibility and low tooling costs, this is especially suitable for production runs of less than 100,000 units per year. With investment in a new press system, we are now also in a position to produce plate mounts with multiple roller tools on the multiple die press. The use of this expensive tool rapidly becomes economically viable with runs of more than 100,000 units.

  • Rotor and stator carriers


    Winkelmann Automotive also supplies formed components for today’s and future hybrid vehicle drives. Our rotor carriers were installed in the GMC Sierra Hybrid more than ten years ago. These high-precision components have very high requirements with regard to concentricity and roundness. Winkelmann Automotive meets these challenges and delivers this precision in series production.

  • Other transmission components


    The forming processes at Winkelmann Automotive have been continuously developed over many years and are also ideally suitable for the manufacture of various transmission components such as clutch cylinders, pistons and pressure plates. We combine our forming processes with subsequent machining, so that the required precision of the components is ensured with low weight and a corresponding cost advantage.
